The 90's was an incredible time to be alive; some would argue it was the best for teenagers growing up. So much exciting innovation was happening, and new products were constantly released, some of which are still around.
During an online discussion, people who were teenagers in the 90s discussed some of their favorite things. If you grew up in the 90s, how many of these were experiences or belongings you had, too?
1. Doing Kid Stuff Without Documentation
Since everyone has a phone, camera, or caller ID, engaging in prank-calling or other mostly harmless "kid" stuff is a little more complicated. One user said they missed the 80s and early 90s for this reason. Someone joked, "Now you need to vape and post it on Instagram to verify that it was a good time."
2. Changing Other People's TV with a Universal Remote
Multiple people said they used to change people's channels from outside their houses, which sounds like the beginning of a horror movie. However, it was all good fun. Technology has advanced enough to make messing with someone's TV time much more difficult.
3. Watching Live Music
Although there are still opportunities to see live music, some argue that the 90s was prime for original music that people still appreciate. One user recalled being given an all-access badge to SXSW in 1994. As they put it, it was "One of the best years for rock/grunge. I'm 44 now, and that experience is still hard to top."
4. Spending Lots of Time Outdoors
Whether they were going door to door selling stuff for school or hanging out with their friends, many kids in the 90s spent more time outdoors than they do now. One specified that they were given free rein to explore if they were home before the streetlights came on (a typical curfew back then).
5. Going to Blockbuster to Rent Movies
Sure, you can access thousands of movies on any app these days, but there was something special about going to Blockbuster with your family or friends to choose a movie to rent. Now, instead of a few minutes in the video store, many people spend hours scrolling to find something worth watching.
6. Not Being Online All the Time
New technology like cell phones and other devices have made life much easier. However, it feels like everyone's expecting you to be "on" all the time or respond quickly. Back in the day, you would have to use dial-up, disconnect your phone line, or take significant measures to be online. Once you were offline again, people typically did not expect to hear back immediately.
7. Feeling Optimistic About the Future
If you were a kid or teenager growing up in the 90s, you likely had a lot less to worry about than society's youth does now. One person explained, "The economy was booming, life was great, we were 'free range' and didn't need to check in constantly, we didn't have concerns about our family or our home."
8. Vanishing Into the Woods
Many people told stories about enjoying disappearing for the day when they were a kid without having paranoid parents checking on them constantly. One said they would take a backpack full of food, books, and toys and enjoy a day of innocent fun if they were home by dinner.
9. Throwing Secret Parties
One person mentioned that as a teenager in the 90s, they threw underground raves in L.A. Others in the comments had similar experiences, throwing parties or shows in the countryside, township halls, and local establishments.
10. Jumping Off the Roof onto a Mattress
After the Undertaker threw another wrestler off the top of the cage in 1998, many kids started to recreate this moment. Whether you were the one jumping off the roof onto a mattress or being the one thrown off, you likely witnessed this at least once in your youth.
Things Teens Don't Want To Hear From Anyone
As the saying goes, the kids are alright — but that doesn't mean they don't need to heed any advice in 2023! Teenagers in the modern era think they know everything, just like in past generations, but the opposite is true.
